composer / designer / geek

where i am
i live in downtown gainesville, florida, and i'm working on my ph.d. at the university of florida. i came here from bowling green, ohio, where i completed my master's degree at bgsu. before that, i worked at the music technology lab at the university of richmond in virginia. i did my undergraduate work there, and was a staff member for 2 years.

if you're in one of my classes and are looking for information, look for it on my UF webspace, http://plaza.ufl.edu/mccabem/.

what i'm doing
i'm a ph.d. music composition student at UF, with a focus on contemporary music, especially electroacoustic music. you can hear some of my work on my music page, or purchase commissions and premieres CD from third practice, or the disc [re] from everglade records. i also have some music up on myspace.

i teach one section of music 1360 in the fall, and 2 sections in the spring. i'm also co-technical director of the florida electroacoustic music festival as well as the third practice festival at the university of richmond. recently i've turned my attention to the study of neuroscience, and have joined the lab team of dr. jamie reilly in the department of communication disorders and neurology. currently i'm also serving on the executive council of the society of composers, inc. as a system administrator and designer.

i moonlight at stubbies and steins as a bartender, barback, organizer, etc. at work i am known as the guy who can fix things that make other things cold (coolers, ice machines, air conditioners, etc).

other stuff...

i was a web designer for quite a while, acting as co-owner of escapement arts & media. the company is still around but not really active. once upon a time, we designed and sold the blankets that are for sale on thinkgeek. if you need to satisfy your swag lust, point your browser there and find a whole truckload of geeky stuff.

you too can make a cute little avatar of yourself, like the one i have above, by going here.

please use a decent web browser like firefox and help promote web standards.

want to watch a silly quicktime movie of me?
